Choleric vs Phlegmatic: Opposites Who Cannot Guess Each Other

These two share no quality on the classical grid. The sharpest difference is speed of commitment: the choleric decides early and defends it, the phlegmatic keeps it open until the situation decides instead.

The classical grid runs on two questions. How fast and outward is the reaction, and how firmly does the thing hold its shape once it has one. Warmth answers the first, dryness the second. Choleric comes out warm and dry. Phlegmatic comes out cold and moist. There is no third quality they might share, because there is no third axis.

Most pairs read each other by turning a dial. A sanguine understands a choleric by picturing themselves more fixed. A melancholic understands a phlegmatic by picturing themselves softer. Choleric and phlegmatic have no dial to turn. Almost nothing in one is a smaller version of anything in the other. So when they get each other wrong, it is not carelessness. The equipment does not fit.

Two ways of entering a conversation

Choleric opens with the conclusion. The reasoning came first, privately, fast, and what arrives at the table is the result of it. This reads as arrogance to anyone who expects the working shown, but it is rarely a claim to be right. It is an offer to be corrected quickly so the group can move. A choleric who decided something at nine will say it at nine, and will be surprised that anyone found this rude.

Phlegmatic opens by making room. The first move is a question, or a summary of what someone else said, or a silence doing more work than it appears to be. The opinion exists. It formed early and it is often accurate, because a person who is not busy talking has been watching. It gets stated when asked, and frequently not otherwise. To a choleric this looks like having no opinion. It is an opinion without a delivery mechanism.

Put them in one meeting and the choleric fills the space while the phlegmatic lets them. Both leave thinking it went that way because of the other person.

Deciding, and the cost of each speed

The choleric decides early and cheaply. Warm means the reaction comes fast. Dry means it sets. The decision then has edges, and the choleric defends them after the ground under them has moved. The strength is real. Somebody has to go first, and the person willing to be wrong out loud gets a stuck room moving. The cost is equally real. Speed plus firmness means the mistakes are large, made confidently, and defended past the point where defence helps.

The phlegmatic decides late and expensively. Cold means the reaction is slow to surface. Moist means it never quite hardens, so it stays open to revision, which is why phlegmatics change their minds without drama and cholerics find this unnerving. The strength is that the decision has absorbed the whole situation, including the parts nobody said aloud. The cost is that many things end up decided by the calendar instead. Waiting is a choice. It just does not feel like one from the inside, and a phlegmatic can spend a year not resolving something and honestly call it a year of thinking it over.

Being wrong, and the week after a bad week

A choleric shown to be wrong usually takes it fast and takes it well, moves on within the hour, and is irritated that everyone else is still on it. What they handle badly is not the mistake. It is being held in it longer than the mistake required.

A phlegmatic shown to be wrong agrees immediately, pleasantly, and possibly too soon. Agreement ends the friction, and ending friction is the reflex. So a phlegmatic apology is not always information. Sometimes it means the point landed. Sometimes it means the conversation was getting warm and needed to stop.

After a bad week they recover in opposite directions. The choleric needs a task, something with a visible result, to put the week back under their control. The phlegmatic needs the ordinary rhythm back. Same walk, same chair, nothing asked of them, and by Thursday it has dissolved. Each recovery looks to the other like the problem. The choleric sees retreat. The phlegmatic sees someone refusing to let a thing settle.

What goes wrong between them, and what actually helps

The failure has one shape and it repeats. The choleric pushes. The phlegmatic yields. Nothing is resolved, because yielding is not agreement, and the choleric mistakes absent resistance for consent. Pressure builds where it cannot be seen, and one day the phlegmatic is gone or immovable, and no warning was ever sent.

The choleric thinks silence means yes. The phlegmatic thinks volume means certainty. Both are wrong, and both keep acting on it.

What helps is small and specific.

  • If you are choleric: let the pause run past the point where it is comfortable. The phlegmatic answer sits two seconds behind your instinct to fill the gap, and it is worth more than what you were going to say. Then ask for the disagreement by name. It will not be volunteered.
  • If you are phlegmatic: say the objection at the time, in one sentence, without a cushion. A choleric absorbs a flat no more easily than a delayed one, and respects you more for it. What you are avoiding is thirty seconds of mild discomfort, and avoiding it is what produces the version where you leave.

What each gets from the other exists because there is no overlap. The choleric gets a reading of the room they cannot generate at any speed. The phlegmatic gets things finished. Neither can fake the other's contribution, which is why the pairing, when it holds, is hard to break.

Nobody is one or the other

Almost nobody is a pure type. Most people reading this page are here because they are some mixture of the two, and the mixture is not a contradiction. A person can be decisive at work and unresisting at home, quick with strangers and immovable with family.
