Sanguine vs Choleric: Two Warm Temperaments, One Holds Its Shape
Both are warm, so both react fast and out loud. The split is dryness: a choleric decision hardens and stays, while a sanguine one stays soft enough to be reshaped by the next good idea in the room.
Put a sanguine and a choleric in the same meeting and for the first ten minutes you may not be able to tell them apart. Both speak early. Both have an energy the rest of the room can feel from the door. Both would rather do something today than think about it until Thursday. The old scheme calls this shared quality warmth, and warmth is about speed: how quickly the reaction comes, and how far outward it goes. On that axis these two are near twins. That is why so many people finish a temperament test with two close scores and no clear answer.
The difference sits on the other axis, and the word for it is dryness. Dryness describes how firmly a thing holds its shape once it has taken one. Sanguine is warm and moist. Choleric is warm and dry. Almost everything below comes out of that single difference.

Choleric opens a conversation by opening the topic. Not unfriendly, usually, but the small talk is a toll it pays quickly on the way somewhere. Within two minutes it has said what it thinks should happen. It is often right, which is part of the problem.
Same speed. Different reason for the speed. Sanguine moves outward toward people. Choleric moves outward toward the outcome. Watch a room long enough and this is the first crack that shows.

A choleric decision sets like plaster. It was made in ninety seconds, and after that it is a position, and arguing with it feels like arguing with architecture. This is the temperament's real gift. When something must be chosen and nobody wants to own it, the choleric will own it, take the consequences, and not go looking for reassurance afterward. Whole projects survive on that.
A sanguine decision is made just as fast and stays soft. Someone offers a better idea at lunch and the decision quietly becomes the new one, without any sense of having changed course. Sanguines rarely experience this as inconsistency. They experience it as being open. Sometimes that is exactly right, because the first plan was thin. Sometimes the fourth version of the plan is no closer to done than the first.

The sanguine does not push. It charms, deflects, agrees on the surface and reopens the same question three days later from a different angle. Cholerics read this as slipperiness. It is closer to a dislike of the temperature in the room.
Being wrong is the cleaner test. A choleric can admit an error, and often does so bluntly, but it costs something, and the admission tends to arrive attached to a plan for fixing it. A sanguine admits it easily, warmly, and sometimes without much having changed underneath. The apology is real. The pattern is also real.
Warmth makes both of them quick. Dryness decides whether the quickness leaves a mark.
After a bad week the choleric works. It attacks the problem, sleeps badly, and would rather be exhausted than idle. The sanguine goes out. It calls people, tells the story of the week until the week is funny, and is genuinely restored by that. Each finds the other's recovery slightly offensive: one looks like avoidance, the other looks like punishment.
When the two of them are in the same room
The reliable failure is this. The choleric decides, the sanguine agrees, and the sanguine did not mean agreement. It meant warmth. A week later nothing has moved and the choleric is furious about a betrayal that never happened. Two warm people can generate real heat here, and because both are quick, it escalates before anyone has thought.
What each can actually do:
- Sanguine: say no out loud, on the day. Not later, not by going quiet. The choleric is not asking you to like the plan, it is asking whether it can count on you. An honest no costs you nothing with this temperament. A soft yes costs you everything.
- Choleric: stop mistaking speed of agreement for agreement. Ask the sanguine what they would do instead, and wait through the pause. Also, hold the decision open one hour longer than feels necessary. That hour is where the sanguine's actual information lives.
When it works, it works well. The sanguine sells what the choleric builds, and the choleric finishes what the sanguine starts. That combination is common in successful pairs precisely because the shared warmth means neither one has to slow down for the other.
Almost nobody is one or the other
Most people reading this are not choosing between two boxes. They are a blend, and the reason this comparison is searched so often is that sanguine and choleric sit next to each other on the warm side of the grid, so the blend of the two is one of the most common there is. A person can be the loudest and friendliest voice at the table and still turn to granite the moment a decision is on the line.
